Thesis and introduction

THESIS: With in the life of Reginald Lewis he accomplished so much. By him attending Harvard with such little money barely none and flipping it into millions.

Reginald F. Lewis was born on December 7, 1942, in a Baltimore, Maryland, neighborhood he later described as “semi-tough.” Strongly influenced by his family, he began his career at the age of ten by delivering the local Afro-American newspaper. Fortune Magazine reported that “as a child, Lewis kept his earnings in a tin can known as ‘Reggie’s Hidden Treasure.’” The tin can had been given to him by his grandmother, who taught him the importance of saving some of everything he earned. Reginald later sold his newspaper business at a profit.

During his high school years at Dunbar, Reginald excelled in both his studies and sports. As quarterback of the football team, shortstop on the baseball team, and a forward on the basketball team, he served as captain in all three teams. Reginald was also elected vice-president of the student body; his friend and classmate, Robert Bell (current Chief Judge of Maryland), was president. In addition, Reginald worked nights and weekends at jobs with his grandfather, a head waiter and maitre d’.

Growing up in a middle class Baltimore neighborhood, Lewis won a football scholarship to Virginia State College (now Virginia State University), graduating with a degree in economics in 1965. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1968. After working at several law firms, Lewis opened TLC Group, a venture capital firm. In 1987 Lewis bought Beatrice International Foods for $985 million, and created TLC Beatrice, a snack food, beverage, and grocery store conglomerate that was the largest black-owned and black-managed business in the U.S. At its peak in 1996, TLC Beatrice had sales of $2.2 billion and was number 512 on Fortune magazine's list of 1,000 largest companies. Lewis was also a prominent philanthropist. His 1992 gift to Harvard Law School was the largest single donation the school had received and created the Reginald F. Lewis Fund for International Study and Research. After his death, his half-brother and former football player Jean S. Fugett took over the company.

Reginald F. Lewis was an African American born to a working class family on December 7, 1942, in East Baltimore. He was born during a time when no one had heard of Martin Luther King, Jr., or civil rights, or integration. Blacks at that time could not try on clothes or shop at many downtown stores. they couldn't eat in certain restaurants or go to certain movie theaters. From his youth Lewis was known for his drive and desire for excellence. The strong work ethic from his mother and grandfather coupled with his life-long hunger for wealth and personal glory fueled his success on the playing field, in the classroom, and in the boardroom. In High School he earned four varsity letters in baseball, three in football where he was the starting quarterback and two varsity letters in basketball. He attended Harvard Law School and became a successful corporate lawyer before remaking himself into a financier and buyer of corporations.

N.H.D. POST 1

I choose Reginald F. Lewis for my NHD Project because I am interested in him becoming the wealthiest black man in history. He was born during a time when no one had heard of Martin Luther King, Jr., or civil rights, or integration. From his youth Lewis was known for his drive and desire for excellence. He entered Harvard University without filling out an application and then attending this school, with only $50.00 and then taking his education and flip that pinch of money and turn it into billions.
